Product Introduction
Esterified derivatives of 19-nortestosterone, anabolic–androgenic steroids. The reference product Deca-Durabolin is nandrolone decanoate injection; nandrolone phenylpropionate is also a historical long-acting preparation
Therapeutic Use
Historical indications include muscular dystrophy, severe burns/trauma rehabilitation and aplastic anaemia; as an anabolic agent for wasting and post-surgical recovery. Most markets have withdrawn the human indication; research use only
Mode of Action
The 19-nor structure gives relatively higher anabolic versus androgenic activity; has intrinsic progestogenic activity suppressing gonadotropin release; partially aromatises to oestradiol, but less than testosterone
Administration & Monitoring
As prescribed; rule out prostate and breast cancer first; monitor haemoglobin (polycythaemia risk), PSA, lipids, liver function, sexual function and spermatogenesis
Important Safety Information
An anabolic steroid and controlled substance; non-medical use is unlawful. Long-term abuse causes dependence, and post-cessation low testosterone may persist for months
Adverse Reactions
Injection-site reactions; acne, hirsutism, alopecia; testicular atrophy, reduced sperm count and infertility in men; menstrual disturbance and voice deepening in women; raised transaminases, reduced HDL; polycythaemia; mood symptoms (irritability, depression)
Important Risks
Cardiovascular risk (polycythaemia, dyslipidaemia, myocardial hypertrophy), reproductive suppression, hepatotoxicity, gynaecomastia; effects on lipids and coagulation; long-term dependence
Contraindications
Pregnancy and lactation; known or suspected prostate or breast cancer; severe cardiac, hepatic or renal impairment; children and adolescents
Special Populations
Contraindicated in children and adolescents; prostate and cardiovascular assessment in older males; may cause infertility in men of childbearing potential, which must be disclosed in advance
Usage Limitations
Prohibited for performance enhancement (WADA Prohibited List); prescription and controlled-substance handling required; rotate injection sites and use aseptic technique
Anti-Doping Testing
WADA Prohibited List S1.1; targets nandrolone and its 19-NA metabolites (19-norandrosterone/19-norethiocholesterol), detected in urine by LC-MS/MS and GC-C-IRMS
Product Quality Testing
Identification (HPLC/MS), assay and content uniformity, related substances, clarity and particulate matter, fill volume, sterility and endotoxin, residual solvents, stability; COA
